The Story

Finding rhythm within turbulence.

Set in darkness, the painting captures a moment of extreme tension. Waves rise and fall with force, lightning fractures the sky, and human figures struggle to maintain direction against overwhelming conditions. The sea is not a backdrop — it is an active presence, shaping every movement within the composition.

The creation of this work required a sustained emotional and physical commitment. Over months of concentrated work, the artist sought to organize chaos into structure — finding rhythm within turbulence. He later described working in an environment of intense focus, often accompanied by music that mirrored the scale and emotional force of the subject.

At the center of the painting stands the figure of Mazu, the sea goddess, serving as both a spiritual anchor and a compositional pivot. This element transforms the scene, introducing a dimension that moves beyond physical struggle into belief, faith, and the unseen.

The painting unfolds through movement. Diagonal forces, shifting light, and the repetition of wave forms create a rhythm that is almost musical. Yet within this intensity, the figures persist — small in scale, but unified in purpose.

Together with Arrival, this work forms part of a larger exploration of migration — not as historical illustration, but as lived experience.
