The painting reflects the process of its making.
The figure of Xuanzang is presented not as a distant historical icon, but as a solitary traveler moving through an expansive and unforgiving landscape. The composition is stripped of excess narrative, focusing instead on movement, direction, and scale.
This painting took more than twenty years to complete. Earlier versions failed to resolve a central issue: the relationship between the figure and space. The turning point came when the artist identified what he described as the "key movement" — a structural solution that unified the figure with the environment.
Once this was achieved, the painting was rebuilt entirely.
The final work is quiet in tone, yet monumental in effect. The figure does not dominate the landscape, nor is he diminished by it. Instead, the two exist in balance — each defining the other.
The painting reflects not only the journey of its subject, but the process of its making.
